Movie News: AVATAR 2 & 3!

This will be very exciting news for some people and the worst news ever for others, but James Cameron has confirmed that his next two projects will be Avatar sequels.  Yes, you read that correctly, not one, but two sequels to the the most successful film of all time.  No real surprise, as the original took over $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office, but can we take anymore?

Here's what Cameron had to say;

"Our goal is to meet and exceed the global audience's expectations for the richness of AVATAR’s visual world and the power of the storytelling. In the second and third films, which will be self contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of AVATAR’s visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world. I'm looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild."

Movie News: BATMAN 3 GETS A TITLE!

After much speculation, Christopher Nolan has finally revealed that the title for the next Batman movie will be THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.  Not the most original title, but let's face it, after the massive success of The Dark Knight it's understandable that they'd want to build on an already established brand.

During his interview with the LA Times, he also went on to reveal that the main villain will not be the Riddler, so expect a load of rumours about exactly which character they are going to select over the coming months!

Which character do you think should be the villain in the new film?

UK Top Ten: 22-24th OCTOBER 2010

Two new releases last weekend, Paranormal Activity 2 and the Bruce Willis action film RED.  Both films made a whole load of money, but it was Paranormal Activity 2 that easily took the number one spot with a huge £3.7m.

Clearly, everyone's getting into the Halloween spirit and enjoying being scared out of their seats.  So, next week is the perfect time for a battle of the horror flicks, as Saw 3D is released nationwide.  Will it be able to knock PA2 off the number one spot or will it continue to dominate the UK box office?

Movie News: SHERLOCK HOLMES 2 - SET PICS

After the huge success of the original film last year, it's no surprise that Holmes and Watson are back to solve another case!  Thanks to my friends at www.justjared.com, I have the first pics from the set of the sequel, currently filming in Greater London.  Granted they're not particularly exciting shots, but it's good to see Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law back together.

Also, just when you think it couldn't get any better, they go and cast Stephen Fry as Holmes' brother Mycroft...brilliant! Not only that, but Holmes' arch nemesis Professor Moriarty (Mad Men's Jared Harris) will be the villain.  This is going to be a sure fire hit and I'm not sure I can wait until it's released next Christmas...but I'll just have to!

Review: WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS

It's been 23 years since the original Wall Street introduced us to the now legendary character of Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas).  It was the role of a lifetime for Douglas and led to him receiving the best actor Oscar in 1987.  There's no doubt it was well deserved, as Gekko is one of the best screen villains of all time.  So why, after more than two decades, has the original director, Oliver Stone, decided to do a sequel? Whatever the reason, he's one of the world's greatest directors and as this is his first sequel, I had very high hopes for this film.

I should start by saying that I enjoyed this film, I just didn't love it. It was great to see Gordon Gekko back, and it was clear that Michael Douglas was loving every second of it. He easily stole every scene he was in and when he wasn't on screen, you're impatiently waiting for him to come back. This film would not have been half as good without him. Fact. The problem is, he's mellowed out too much for my liking.  I wanted to see the tough no nonsense Gekko, the "greed is good" Gekko, the "when I get a hold of the son of a bitch who leaked this, I'm gonna tear his eyeballs out and I'm gonna suck his fucking skull" Gekko.  Sadly, he only ever shows flashes of his former self and the film suffers as a result.

It's left to Josh Brolin (Bretton James) to take the role of the villain, which he does well, he's just no Gekko and that's all I kept thinking throughout.  That being said, he still delivers one of the standout performances of the film. The same can be said for Shia LaBoeuf (Jacob Moore), who had the difficult task of portraying a character that was tough and direct, as well as vunerable and emotional.  His love interest is Gekko's estranged daughter (Winnie Gekko), played by British 'actress-of-the-moment' Carey Mulligan. This relationship is the main driving force of the film, but only acts to weaken it, as it changes from being a gritty economic thriller into a light romantic drama.  Some people may prefer this, but that's not what I'd been expecting to see.

If you've seen the original film, you'll know that you need an Economics degree to truly understand what's going on, and this one is no different.  It's not the plot that's tricky, it's all the financial jargon.  There were several points when I didn't have a clue what the hell was happening.  In fact, the only way I could work it out, was by seeing how the other character's were reacting.  This could have just been my own financial ignorance, so don't let it worry you. It didn't ruin the film for me, it just meant there were the occasional moments of confusion.  That's why I don't 'dabble' with the stock markets!

Oliver Stone is a legend in the film world, having produced and directed some incredible films over the years, but this one will not be up there with the best.  There were some fantastic sweeping views of Manhattan and the whole film had a real 'quality' feel about it, but it's not without its faults. There's one scene that had Jake (LaBoeuf) and Bretton (Brolin) race against one another of motorbikes as a test of their masculinity. It was so dull that I found myself wondering where they'd filmed it, rather than on the edge of my seat with excitement.  Look out, there's a branch in the road and only one bike can get through! Who cares?

Also, I'm sure there's a message within the film about how the greedy bankers have manipulated the economy to their own personal gain, only to be bailed out by the tax payer when it all collapses.  The truth is though,  this wasn't dealt with in any real depth, so I didn't feel like I'd learned anymore than I would have done from an episode of Newsround.

This isn't a bad film by any means and there are some great moments (nearly all involving Michael Douglas), it just could have been so much better.

Movie News: THE HOBBIT GETS THE GREENLIGHT!

It's taken years to get to this point, but it's now been confirmed that The Hobbit will begin filming in February 2011 with Peter Jackson in the director's chair.

This is exciting news for the millions of Tolkien fans around the world.  The Lord of the Rings trilogy went on to become one of the most successful film franchises of all time.  In fact it did so well, there'll be tremendous pressure on Jackson to deliver once again.

The Hobbit will be split into two films and the early word is, they could end up being the most expensive films of all time, with an expected combined price tag of $500m.

Now all eyes will be on casting, as it's unclear who will be returning for these prequels.  The chances are Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Andy Serkis (Gollum) and Viggo Mortenson (Aragorn) will reprise their roles, but we'll have to wait and see what happens over the coming weeks.

Comp: LEGEND of the GUARDIANS XBOX 360 GAME

Acclaimed filmmaker Zack Snyder makes his animation debut with the fantasy family adventure LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA’HOOLE which is out on 22nd October. The film follows Soren, a young owl enthralled by his father’s epic stories of the Guardians of Ga’ Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors who had fought a great battle to save all of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones.

While Soren dreams of someday joining his heroes, his older brother, Kludd, scoffs at the notion, and yearns to hunt, fly and steal his father’s favor from his younger sibling. But Kludd’s jealousy has terrible consequences—causing both owlets to fall from their treetop home and right into the talons of the Pure Ones. Now it is up to Soren to make a daring escape with the help of other brave young owls. Together they soar across the sea and through the mist to find the Great Tree, home of the legendary Guardians—Soren’s only hope of defeating the Pure Ones and saving the owl kingdoms.

The film features the voices of Emily Barclay, Abbie Cornish, Emilie de Ravin, Ryan Kwanten, Miriam Margolyes, Helen Mirren, Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess, Hugo Weaving and David Wenham.

Movie News: Jackass 3D Clip

I've managed to get hold of a clip from the new Jackass 3D movie, which is being released here in the UK next month.  If you've already seen the trailer, you'll know what I mean when I say 'high five'. If you haven't, you're going to love this.  I've seen this clip several times now and it still makes me laugh.

This is just the tip of the iceberg though, as Johnny Knoxville and the gang promise the biggest and most painful stunts yet, all in glorious 3D.

Movie News: ON SET PICS - THE HANGOVER 2

The Hangover was the big surprise hit of 2009 and went on to take $490m worldwide.  Having only cost $35m to make, it was no surprise when a sequel was announced, but what could they do and where could they go?  Well, it seems we have the answer...BANGKOK!  These on set pictures were taken during the filming of some of the scenes in a Californian airport.

I'll let you imagine the shocking/filthy/embarrassing situations these guys could end up in, but one thing's for sure, it's going to be a lot of fun.

I wonder if they'll bring Mike Tyson back?

Movie News: ANOTHER BATMAN 3 RUMOUR

Still no official confirmation, but I have it on good authority that Tom Hardy is joining the cast of the new Batman movie.  He clearly impressed Nolan, after a scene stealing performance in Inception, and since filming on the new Mad Max film has now been delayed, Hardy has some time on his hands.

So, will he be playing The Riddler and has he pushed his Inception co-star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, out of the frame?  Only time will tell.

UK Top Ten: 8-10th October 2010

Three new entries take the top three spots on the chart this week and it's Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps that takes the all important number one position.  The sequel to the 1987 hit managed to bring in more than £1.7m over the weekend period.

Disappointing week for Buried however, as it plummets to ninth position after only a couple of weeks.  Clearly, audiences aren't too keen on spending ninety minutes underground in a coffin with Ryan Reynolds.

Movie News: NEW SPIDERMAN VILLAIN

So, it's been officially announced that Rhys Ifans will play a villain in the next Spiderman film.  Will he be the only villain and which villain will he play?

Sony Pictures are keeping their cards close to their chests, but there are strong rumours that Ifans will be taking on the role of The Lizard. Other potential villains could include Scorpion, Carnage, Chameleon or Jackal.

Which villain would like to star in this Spiderman reboot?

Movie News: THE BOURNE LEGACY

If, like me, you're a fan of the Jason Bourne film series, you're not going to like this news at all.

The fourth film The Bourne Legacy is going to be made, but without Matt Damon and without Jason Bourne.  Yes, I know what you're thinking, and I haven't got a clue either! The new film is going to be directed by Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton, Duplicity) and during an interview with hollywood-elsewhere.com, this is what he had to say;

"The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal," Gilroy says. "Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he's very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I'm building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy...the world we're making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne's return [down the road].

"Everything you saw in the first three films actually happened, and everyone who got into will be rewarded for paying attention. We're going to show you the bigger picture, the bigger canvas. When you see what we're going and see what we're doing it'll be pretty obvious....but Jason Bourne's actvities in the first three films is the immediate trigger."

I don't like the idea of this film at all. Why can't they just make another Bourne film with Matt Damon? That's what I and the rest of the Bourne fan base want to see.  That being said, I probably will still go and see this film when it comes out in 2012.  For one thing, Tony Gilroy wrote the screenplay for the all of the Bourne movies, so he knows how to write a good script.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it turns out.  Let me know what you think, by commenting below.

Movie News: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4

We all know how much Tom Cruise loves to do his own stunts, but surely now he's 48, he'll be leaving the tough stuff to the stunt doubles.  Don't be ridiculous, he's showing no signs of slowing down and here's the proof.  Check out these incredible pics from the set of Mission Impossible 4 currently filming in Prague.
I'm a huge fan of the Mission Impossible series, yes even the second one, so I'm hoping this is going to be Cruise back to his best.

Movie News: CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: VOYAGE of the DAWN TREADER

Fans of the Chronicles of Narnia series rejoice, as the third film Voyage of the Dawn Treader is released here in the UK on 9 December 2010.  The first film was great, the second not so much, but perhaps they can get it back on course with this one.  If they do, we may well see the remaining four books transfer to the big screen.  Also, I'm loving the return of the Snow Queen (Tilda Swinton), in my opinion, she was always the best thing about these films.

We're only five weeks away from the release of the next Harry Potter film and there's no doubt it's going to be the darkest of the lot so far.  If you don't believe me, then check these new character posters. I'm loving the mean and moody look.

Movie News: BATMAN 3

It's the news all Batman fans have been waiting for.  Not just confirmation that Christopher Nolan will be in the director's chair once again for Batman 3, but that it starts recording in New Orleans next April for a summer 2012 release date.

So far, nothing else has been confirmed, however the rumours are that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be playing the Riddler.  If that's true, it'd be great casting, but looks like we're just going to have to wait and see.

Trailer of the Week: TRUE GRIT

There have been some fantastic film westerns over the years, but my clear favourite has always been the 1992 hit Unforgiven.  Gene Hackman + Morgan Freeman + Clint Eastwood = Pure Genius! Nothing has really challenged this film and it's nearly twenty years old.  However, there could be a contender on the horizon.

The Coen Brothers (Raising Arizona, No Country For Old Men, Fargo) have directed a reworking of the 1969 John Wayne classic, True Grit, and judging by the trailer this film has the potential to be awesome.  Obviously their remake of The Ladykillers wasn't that great, but I'm willing to give them another chance, afterall they have made some superb movies over the last twenty five years.

It's released in January 2011 and you can check out the trailer by clicking on the link below.

Review: BURIED

Buried is every person's worst nightmare and forces you to live through every stressful second of it. Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds) is a contractor working in Iraq who wakes up to find himself gagged, bound and buried alive in a coffin in the middle of nowhere.  He's been kidnapped and his captors want $5m dollars before 9pm or he'll be left to die alone. Fortunately, there are a few things in the coffin with him including a phone, torch, flask and a lighter, all of which help add to the tension and give the film the momentum it needs to carry you through the ninety minute run time.

The film is shot in real time and never cuts away from the coffin, so you're stuck in there with him the whole time. Personally, I didn't mind this at all, as it adds to the anxiety you feel for Reynold's character. By not cutting away to a different scene, you don't have any 'relief' moments, ramping up the levels of tension. The 'panic attack' scenes are intense and there were times when I started shallow breathing, even though I don't suffer from claustrophobia, so the film was clearly affecting me. Either that or I ate my hot dog too quickly...actually that's probably what it was.

I've always liked Ryan Reynolds, but he has tended to play goofy characters (Van Wilding) or starred in rom-coms (The Proposal), so I never thought he'd make a great dramatic actor. However, he gives an incredible performance in this movie (easily his best one to date). Add to this the superb, yet suffocating direction by Rodrigo Cortes and you have a great high quality thriller. Some of the shots he manages to achieve are extraordinary, especially considering the cramped conditions.  Of course this concept isn't new, as anyone who's seen Quentin Tarantino's CSI episode will know, but it does feel fresh and it's a remarkable feat managing to stretch this idea out into a convincing ninety minute feature.

This film isn't perfect by any means, and without getting too picky, there where a few things that annoyed me.  Although Ryan Reynolds is the only actor that appears on screen, there are a few voice actors involved as well for the telephone scenes.  On the whole they were great, especially Stephen Tobolowsky as Alan Davenport, but I just wasn't convinced by Robert Paterson's (not the guy from Twilight, that's Pattinson) character, Dan Brenner. I don't want to slate the actor, but it was obvious that he'd simply recorded his dialogue in a studio and they'd just stuck it in the film. The conversation and therefore the connection between himself and Conroy (Reynolds) didn't feel authentic.  Maybe I'm over thinking it, but if you go and see the film, you'll hopefully understand what I'm saying.

Another thing that wound me up was the whole 'phone signal underground'.  They try and address it with a line of dialogue suggesting that he must only be a few feet underground which is why he can get a signal, but c'mon, seriously?   I can't get a phone signal when I'm standing in certain parts of Richmond Park and the last time I checked, Surrey wasn't a war torn part of the world.  Finally, how many phones nowadays only have a talktime of ninety minutes?  That must have been a really dodgy battery. Anyway, I guess these are just minor complaints and they didn't totally ruin my enjoyment of the film.

If you suffer from claustrophobia, I strongly suggest you don't go and see this movie.  If you're going on a first date, don't go and see this movie. If you need a good laugh, don't go and see this movie. If you don't like Ryan Reynolds, don't go and see this movie. However, if you enjoy a genuinely tense, well acted, well directed thriller that will keep you guessing right up to the end, then go and see this movie!

All the way through the film I kept thinking about who I'd call and what I'd do if I was stuck in that situation.  Let's just say,  I hope it never happens, cause I'd have died well before the phone had a chance to ring!

UK Top Ten: 24-26th September 2010

There were four new releases this week, but none of them could knock The Other Guys off the number one spot.  Julia Roberts turning up in London for the premiere of her new film Eat, Pray, Love seems to have paid off, as it takes second place in the charts, but a disappointing opening for Ben Affleck's latest flick The Town which could only manage third.

Next week sees the release of 'Buried' starring Ryan Reynolds.  There's been a lot of hype surrounding this movie, but are people willing to pay £10 to spend ninety minutes in a coffin, buried six feet under? Only time will tell.
