Movie News: THE HOBBIT GETS THE GREENLIGHT!

It's taken years to get to this point, but it's now been confirmed that The Hobbit will begin filming in February 2011 with Peter Jackson in the director's chair.

This is exciting news for the millions of Tolkien fans around the world.  The Lord of the Rings trilogy went on to become one of the most successful film franchises of all time.  In fact it did so well, there'll be tremendous pressure on Jackson to deliver once again.

The Hobbit will be split into two films and the early word is, they could end up being the most expensive films of all time, with an expected combined price tag of $500m.

Now all eyes will be on casting, as it's unclear who will be returning for these prequels.  The chances are Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Andy Serkis (Gollum) and Viggo Mortenson (Aragorn) will reprise their roles, but we'll have to wait and see what happens over the coming weeks.

  1. Are you hoping Martin Freeman will be able to play Bilbo or do you reckon an unknown may be better for the role?

  2. Fantastic news! My fav films will now be complete with The Hobbit, just hoping Ian McKellen et al will agree as it won't be the same without them.

  3. I have to say, as much as I like Martin Freeman, I don't want to see him as Bilbo. Hopefully he'll be too busy filming the new Sherlock episodes and so the role will go to an unknown.

  4. Oh dear, guess you're not happy with the recent announcement about him getting the part then!
