Movie News: STEPHEN FRY - SHERLOCK HOLMES 2

Thanks to my friends at Splash News, here's a picture of Stephen Fry from the set of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes 2. In a piece of genius casting, Fry will be playing Sherlock Holmes' older brother, Mycroft.  I think it's going to be a fantastic film and I cannot wait to see Fry and Downey Jr going head to head.

I realise it's not the best shot ever, afterall that could just be a pic of Stephen Fry going to a friend's dinner party, but hopefully there'll be more released over the coming weeks and months.

Movie News: WHO'LL BE THE NEW SUPERMAN?

So we know that Christopher Nolan is going to relaunch the Superman franchise and Warner Bros are hoping they'll have as much success as they did when he revived the Batman series a few years ago.  Directing duties, however, go to Zack Snyder (300, Dawn of the Dead), so how much influence will Nolan have on the finished movie? Probably a fair bit I'd imagine, as everything he touches turns to gold and with the Harry Potter movie machine drawing to a close next year, Warner Bros need to fill those money making shoes.

The big question is though, who will play the man of steel?

It seems the current front runner is British actor, Matthew Goode (above), who has worked with Snyder previously on comic book adaption Watchmen.  At 6ft 2 inches he's got the height, but is he the right choice for the role?

As we know, Brandon Routh is the current man of steel and according to some reports, is still very much in the frame for the next film.  Personally, as much as I liked him in Superman Returns, if they're going to truly reboot this film franchise, they're going to have choose someone else to wear the tights.

Will Tom Welling ever get the chance to play Superman on the big screen? Probably not. He's just too synonymous with Smallville and although he does a great job in that show, I doubt it's the direction Nolan and Snyder are looking to go in. Whenever there are Superman casting rumours though, his name will always be in the mix.

It seems a lot of Superman fans like the idea of Matthew Bomer being considered for the part.  Bomer is currently starring in the US series' White Collar and Chuck. He's definitely an interesting choice and if you believe the rumours, it's not the first time his name has been in the mix to play the part.

There'll be plenty of other names cropping over the coming months, but a decision needs to be made fairly quickly, as the film goes into production in six months time.

Who do you think would be the right person to play Superman?

UK Top Ten: 19-21st NOVEMBER 2010

Harry Potter has returned and broken all sorts of UK box office records. The Deathly Hallows has taken a staggering £18.3m in just three days! That's more than fives times the amount taken by the rest of the top ten films this week, put together. It makes it the biggest weekend opening of all time in the UK, easily beating Quantum of Solace, which made £15.3m back in 2008.

Due Date continued to perform well and has made a fair chunk of money over the weekend, especially considering everyone on the planet was watching Potter.  A surprise entry into the top ten is Bollywood movie Guzaarish, which having only opening in 52 cinemas (Harry Potter was in 529) still made enough money to put it into eighth place on the chart.

Movie News: DANIEL RADCLIFFE POST POTTER

We're only a week away from the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, so it seems the perfect time to reveal this picture of Daniel Radcliffe in his first film role since filming wrapped on the Potter series.

He'll be playing a lawyer in the upcoming Hammer horror film The Woman In Black and as you can see from the picture, he's grown up a lot, but can he convince us that he isn't just Harry Potter without the scar and glasses?  We'll find out when it's released next year.

Also, is it just me, or does he look a bit like David Tennant?

UK Top Ten: 5-7th NOVEMBER 2010

Clearly, we're already bored of scary movies and have decided to abandon them in favour of comedy, as Due Date takes the top position this week with £2.3m.  It's closely followed in the runner-up spot by another comedy 3D Jackass, which managed to make almost £1.7m.

I was really disappointed with the performance of Let Me In, which took less than half a million, a travesty considering how good the film is.  Maybe positive word of mouth will help it along next week, although I have a feeling it won't.

Movie News: NEW CHRONICLES OF NARNIA TRAILER

The latest trailer for the new Chronicles of Narnia film has now been released and I have to say, it looks pretty good.  The last couple have trailers have made the film look a bit dry, so I'm pleased to finally see a bit of action.  It does look a bit like Pirates of the Caribbean at one point, but that's not a bad thing by any means! I think my only issue is that the CGI does look a bit ropey in places.  Hopefully that'll all be sorted out before the film's released next month.

Anyway, I'll stop going on, so you can click on the link below and see what you think.

Movie News: JAMES BOND WILL RETURN...HOPEFULLY!

Well, it seemed as if we might never see Daniel Craig's third outing as 007, after MGM hit some serious financial trouble.  There does appear to be light at the end of the tunnel though, as another company is apparently willing to put up the money to cover production costs and as part of the deal, they'll receive 50% of the movie rights.  Not bad at all, especially considering how much money the last two films made.

If this is all true, then expect the rumour mills to start churning out potential Bond 23 titles, musicians performing the theme tune and Bond girls!

Could we see a new Bond film by the end of 2012? Only time will tell.

UK Top Ten: 29-31st OCTOBER 2010

No surprise that a horror film took the number one spot at the UK box office over Halloween weekend.  Clearly people aren't bored of the Saw franchise just yet, as the seventh film, Saw 3D, took more than £3.6m, making it the most successful film of the series.

Despicable Me continues to bring in the money, as does Paranormal Activity 2. However, it wasn't a great weekend for the new Simon Pegg comedy, Burke and Hare, which failed to hit the £1m mark.

There are two big new releases next weekend; the Robert Downey Jr comedy Due Date and the vampire horror Let Me In.  You can check out my review of the latter on the 'reviews' section of this blog.

Review: LET ME IN

I should start by saying that I haven't seen the original Swedish horror film Let the Right One In. I think this was a good thing, as I didn't go into the screening with any preconceptions. However, this movie is being sold as a 're-imagining' rather than a 're-make', so I'm now very keen to see the original and decide for myself.

Let Me In is set in the seemingly bleak and soul-less town of Los Alamos, New Mexico. It follows the story of Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee), a twelve year old loner, who's struggling to cope with his parents' separation at home and the vicious bullying he faces at school.  His life changes dramatically though, when a young girl and her father move into his apartment block. However, things are not what they seem.

The key to this film is the relationship between the two young characters Owen and Abby (Chloe Grace Moretz) and the film cleverly stops you from getting to know anyone else.  Techniques like, never seeing Owen's mother's face, or not revealing names and back stories of other characters, means you're always kept at a distance.  This has the effect of drawing you into the children's story even more, as they become the only characters you really care about.  This becomes particular disturbing in some scenes, as you care so much for these young characters, you start questioning who the true villains of the film are.

It's easy to think this'll be some toothless vampire thriller, but you'd be wrong, as there are definite touches of horror throughout.  If you're not a horror fan though, I don't want to put you off seeing this.  It's more The Shining than The Exorcist and even though there are some violent bloody moments, you only really hear them, rather than see them.  The problem is, I think that can sometimes be more terrifying, but that could just be me!

Let Me In is only the third feature film from director Matt Reeves (The Pallbearer, Cloverfield), but it's by far his best. By placing the camera at a distance overhead or by using long slow tracking shots, he perfectly captures the cold isolation of not just the location, but the characters as well. Also, at one point in the film there's a car accident involving one of the key characters and the camera stays in the vehicle the entire time and doesn't cut away until the car comes to a stop. It makes you feel like you're trapped in the back of the car and it's really weird...in a good way. You'll know what I mean when you go and see it.

Whether you've seen the original or not, at the end of the day, this film was going to succeed or fail based on the strength of its central performances and it succeeds in a big way.  Both Smit-McPhee and Moretz are superb, which will be no surprise to anyone who's seen them in any of their recent films including The Road and Kick Ass.  The powerful friendship they portray onscreen is totally believeable and lifts the whole film to another level.

Let Me In has become one of my favourite films of the year, although the ending is a bit unsettling.  I won't ruin it for you, but I can tell you you'll have plenty of questions as the credits roll.

If you're thinking about going to see this movie, don't expect some Twilight-esque teen romance, as you're going to be disappointed. If however, you want to see that rare creature; a beautifully shot, superbly acted horror, then this is the perfect film for you.  Make sure you book a late night screening, so you're properly spooked out on the way home.
